(Yep, that\u2019s the light from your phone)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>What is blue light?<\/h3>\n<p>We all know about UVA and UVB rays (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.treatwell.ie\/treatment-files\/mineral-vs-chemical-sunscreens-an-expert-explains-which-is-better-for-your-skin\/\">and wear broad-spectrum SPF every day to protect ourselves, right?<\/a>). Think of blue light in the same family. \u201cBlue light is a spectrum of light that is emitted mainly by the sun, but also by our digital devices,\u201d Andrea explains \u201cas our use of such devices increases, so does our exposure to blue light\u201d.<\/p>\n<h3>How does blue light affect the skin?<\/h3>\n<p>Again, think about how UV rays penetrate the skin at different levels. \u201cBlue light has one of the shortest, highest-energy wavelengths which means it can penetrate the skin more deeply than UV\u201d Andrea points out. It has also been shown to generate more ROS (reactive oxygen species) than UVA and UVB combined, \u201ca build-up of ROS can cause damage to skin cells\u201d.<\/p>\n<h3>What are the effects of blue light on skin?<\/h3>\n<p>Long-term or excessive exposure to blue light can cause visible damage to the skin. According to Andrea, \u201cit accelerates the oxidation process which is directly linked to photoaging and causes hyperpigmentation, inflammation and weakening of the skin\u2019s barrier\u201d. Basically, it can lead to dehydration, sensitivity and premature ageing.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.treatwell.ie\/treatment-files\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2020\/05\/valentina_muntoni_95772575_2375419636084262_1708030097372089997_n-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1796 size-full lazyload\" data-src=\"http:\/\/www.treatwell.ie\/treatment-files\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2020\/05\/valentina_muntoni_95772575_2375419636084262_1708030097372089997_n-1.jpg\" alt width=\"500\" height=\"600\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 500px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 500\/600;\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>What are the effects of blue light on the body?<\/h3>\n<p>Exposure to blue light at night suppresses melatonin production (the hormone that makes us tired) so it can interrupt sleep. Remember, the biggest source of blue light is the sun \u2013 that\u2019s why exposure from electronic devices can trick the body into thinking it\u2019s daytime. Some exposure in daylight can lift your mood though, just like a sunny day.<\/p>\n<h3>How can I reduce blue light exposure?<\/h3>\n<p>Let\u2019s start with your tech \u2013 and no, we won\u2019t say cut down on Netflix time (we\u2019re being realistic here). Most smartphones have a setting \u2013 \u2018Night Shift\u2019 on iPhone \u2013 that limits the blue light emitted by its display by making it warmer in tone. It reduces the strain on your eyes but also the damage to your skin. You can also buy blue light shields for all devices.<\/p>\n<h3>How can I protect my skin?<\/h3>\n<p>SPF is a pretty good place to start. Not all sunscreens protect against blue light though so look for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.treatwell.ie\/treatment-files\/mineral-vs-chemical-sunscreens-an-expert-explains-which-is-better-for-your-skin\/\">mineral formulas containing zinc oxide<\/a>. Andrea also recommends incorporating products that are rich in antioxidants into your skincare routine.
