A guide to the 5 most popular beard styles

2 September 2020 by Beth Ryan

The humble beard.  Whether it’s on your face because you couldn’t be bothered to get rid, or it’s more of a well-crafted labour of love, it’s hard to not to be a fan. When it comes to sculpting, there are a number of styles to choose from (aside from ‘letting it do its thing’), so here’s five of them. The most popular, if you will, ready to present to the barber at your next grooming appointment.

By Rachel Spedding

  • 1 Classic stubble

AKA, the intro beard, or 'designer' stubble. It’s that I ‘didn’t have time to shave’ look and is, rejoice, the easiest to cultivate. Just leave your rasor be for a little while. Better yet, it’s super easy to maintain; with just a little trimming required to keep the length as you like it. We think 3-4 days is optimum length.

  • 2 The shaped beard

For a properly shaped (sharp) beard, ask your barber to use a razor and square off the edge. Think angular – geometry of the face – finding a style that suits your face shape, without looking too sculpted. They’ll also take the hair off your neck for a real distinction between beard and bod. You sharp thing, you.

  • 3 The short-but-full

A tamer version of the full-blown beard, the short and full is versatile; take it from lazy morning to office, without the need for much maintenance. If you can grow an even beard all over, you’ll reach this style with ease. Once the length is there, you'll need a decent balm or beard oil to keep it smooth (TLC, you know).

  • 4 The real, proper beard

This one takes some crafting. A real-deal beard is a statement that will most definitely require some maintenance. It can round out an angled face, or elongate a rounder face. #Science. Invest in a beard shampoo (really), a good comb, and regular trips to your new favourite person: your barber.

  • 5 The salt and pepper beard

Think Clooney, Gyllenhaal, probably your dad. The salt and pepper beard, as with the hair on your head, exists to showcase that wondrous dapple of grey hairs that will naturally arrive. We’d suggest sporting the short-but-full with your speckled beard, as the hair texture may be a little more wirey once greyed. Unruly hairs are best kept shorter.
