How to wash your hair less without anyone noticing (from someone who only does it once a week)

14 May 2020 by Beth Ryan

There are loads of reasons why you should wash your hair less frequently. It keeps your colour fresh for longer, your hair will be all-round healthier – but the one that we really, really care about, washing your hair is a chore. Do you know what I want to do with my evening? Drink wine and watch Netflix. Do you know what I don’t want to do? Wash my hair. You do the maths. Here’s some tried and tested ways of squeezing a couple of extra days out of your hair. You are welcome.

By Beth Ludolf

  • 1 Style your hair based on the phase its in

Hair down on wash day, tie it up for 3 days then repeat – that’s not what we mean by styling based on its condition. Start with freshly washed hair, styled how you normally would – airdry, blowdry, you get the gist. On the second day (the day your hair looks the best in my opinion), go for something a little messier. On day 3, use your straighteners to smooth it out into something sleek, the oil will work to your advantage. Day 4, top knot. Obviously.

  • 2 Don't use dry shampoo too early

A generous spritz of dry shampoo seems like an obvious way to keep your hair looking clean, right? Well, technically you are right but holding out is even better (especially if you’re trying to cut down to the absolute minimum). Using dry shampoo too early will cause product build-up and you’ll need to wash it sooner. Try to resist until the very last day.

  • 3 Think about which products you use

Fine hair can easily get weighed down with build-up (including dry shampoo, remember) so be more conservative when you’re using products. Curly hair can handle a lot more – and actually needs it. If you’re going a few days between washes, be liberal with your product. That way your curls won’t look dehydrated or undefined a couple of days down the line.

  • 4 Blow-dry your roots

Curly hair tends to feel clean for longer compared to hair with less volume. If your hair is straight you probably start to feel oil at the roots the day after washing (and it only makes hair flatter *sobs*). Blasting your roots with a hairdryer will help to disperse the natural oils away from the scalp and give your hair a volume boost. Move your hair to either side, working your way all over your crown.

  • 5 What about after working out?

Yes, you’ll want to wash your hair more if you’re working out a lot. You can still squeeze out an extra day though. Tip your head forward and blast your roots with a hairdryer to dry any sweat. Your hair will feel cleaner and it will be easier to style. Try keeping your sweatier workouts for days nearer hair wash day.
