The hair trends to look out for in 2019 (according to the experts)

Published on 8 January 2019 by Beth Ryan

Here we go – some juicy innovation for you. Our good friends at Wella tend to call the shots when it comes to hair; they’ve got over 135 years experience under their belt, so we’re happy to say that their word is gospel. We headed to their trends update, to discover the latest goings-on in hair technology; from the colours you will most definitely be requesting soon, to advances in their product range.

    • 1 'New trends' – how?

According to the Wella pros, the hair industry have been using the same molecules for hair colouring for well over a century, but there's a new way to colour in town (and it's pretty nifty). New technology minimises the formation of free radicals (which cause damage to the hair during colouring), to make for all-round healthier strands. Basically, the world of hair colour is truly evolving.

    • 2 Futuristic tones

Metallics have been on our radar for a long while now. Zoë Irwin, Wella’s Professional Trends Expert, explains that this trend ‘create[s] dimension together with a soft metallic ethereal glow’, combing cool and warm tones. ‘We’re thinking of the year 2000’ – she goes on, how we believed the ‘future’ would look. Bringing that ‘alien-like’ vibe to hair colour. The icier the better with this range of colour. If you like your hair cool (not just in tone *ahem*) you'll want to try it.

    • 3 Amber slate

The auburn colour palette has proved popular for the last few years in fashion, but it’s now the turn of hair, as 70s retro forms the inspiration for this next trend. Fusing caramel blonde and red – for a real nod to the autumn season – the warm-tone-cool-base combo makes for a style that suits every skin tone. Wella have also coined it 'baked yellow'. We'll be showing the picture above, because that hair is nice.

    • 4 Natural texture

Wella explain that wearing hair with its natural texture has overtaken straightening in certain places (yes to that). Freehand colouring makes for an easier application of dye, allowing several tones to be blended more easily. Heading to specific salons for natural hair colouring will no longer be necessity, as the education around different hair types increases. In short: it’s a pretty darn exciting time to be working in the hair (and salon) industry.
