    3. You’re going to be seeing these hair trends everywhere

You’re going to be seeing these hair trends everywhere

Published on 7 March 2020 - Last updated on 26 April 2022 by Beth Ryan

The year is 2009. Your parting is basically level with your right ear. Your sweeping fringe is enviable. You look in the mirror and backcomb your hair for the fifteenth time that morning. Life is good.

Ahh, hair trends. You have the power to make us do such questionable things. We talked to Senior Creative Director, Craig Taylor, and Senior Creative Colourist, Francesca Dixon, at Hari’s Salon about the styles cool people are wearing now. Spoiler alert: it’s not a massive side fringe.

    • 1 Bleached bangs

Sorry balayage (we’ll always love you), but this year our love affair is with graphic, chunky styles. The look? Bold, not blended. According to Francesca “It’s all about colour-pop face framers. Thick, bleached pieces at the front of the head that are toned to contrast the rest of the hair”. Bonus points for fashion colours, like pink or purple.

    • 2 The mullet

The 80s called, it wants its hair cut back – that’s right, the mullet is officially back. “The mullet is the extreme version of the choppy cuts we’re seeing everywhere right now.”, Craig explains, “If you’re brave enough to try it, it’s seriously cool”. Just look at Miley Cyrus.

    • 3 The shag

Made famous by the one and only Jane Fonda, the 70s Shag Cut is a cool-girl favourite. “It’s about introducing layers and texture”, Craig tells us, “think Debbie Harry and Patti Smith. The best thing about The Shag, it’s completely individual and can be adapted by adjusting the length and layer to suit the person and their hair texture.”

    • 4 Get textured

Strong, blunt outlines have reigned supreme but, according to Francesca, it’s time for texture. “Blunt bobs have been shattered with layers for a textured look.”, she says, “Shorter, pixie cuts are having a resurgence too – broken with texture to give a tough, boyish look”.
