You’ve heard of minimalism, now it’s time for ‘skinimalism’, the natural, glowy skin trend we’re loving

9 February 2021 by Beth Ryan

Like all great beauty trends, we stumbled across this one on the Internet. Not Reddit or TikTok this time, but Pinterest. Skinimalism is an ultra-natural, skincare-cum-make-up routine. Think Glossier vibes – effortless, cool, fresh and paired back. Here’s how to hop on the trend.

1 A face workout for firmness

This is basically for the same reason we’ve been trying to keep up with our pilates routine from our living room floor for the past year. Stretching and relaxation exercises strengthen and tone the muscles in our face. Just a few minutes a day are enough to promote blood circulation, stimulate collagen production and strengthen the connective tissue. The result? Firmer, younger-looking skin. Search #faceworkout on Instagram for tonnes of how-to videos.

2 Aloe vera for soothing and moisture

An absolute miracle cure when it comes to natural skincare. The gel of the medicinal plant contains lots of goodness that supplies our skin with moisture, stimulates collagen production and counteracts the signs of ageing. It’s also cooling, soothing and filled with antiseptic properties, which ensure a healthy glow. Try a mask or moisturising cream that boasts aloe vera as an ingredient.

3 A little bit of makeup (if you fancy it)

Skinimalism is all about a natural look so now’s not the time for heavy coverage foundations and concealers. A tinted moisturiser, BB or CC cream will help even out skin tone while letting the skin underneath shine through. Spot conceal with a tiny amount of light coverage concealer to blue blemishes and brighten dark circles. Brush your eyebrows into shape (our favourite part of any makeup routine) and you’re good to go. Mascara, optional.
