Six nail shapes you need to know before your next nail appointment

18 August 2019 by Beth Ryan

Round

The simple, low maintenance shape

Short and sweet, round nails are smoothed into perfectly round semi-circles. They’re the most durable – and therefore low maintenance – shape. No need for nail extensions, an express gel mani is all you need for this one.

Square

Good for short nails.

Exactly what it says on the tin, nails are filed flat on top with squared-off corners. If you have slender fingers and narrow nail beds, this shape will be extremely flattering. If not, it can make fingers appear shorter.

Almond

Born in the 90s and still going strong

Guess what? We’re still obsessed with 90s beauty trends. My personal shape-of-choice, it’s less extreme than stilettos, but still quite extra. If you want that perfect almond shape then keep your nails long – nail extensions are best for added strength.

Squoval

Sort of square, sort of oval

Whether you’ve got long nails, short nails, long fingers or short fingers, squoval is guaranteed to flatter. Nails are filed into a square shape but corners are rounded off for a softer effect.

Coffin

Yes, the Kylie Jenner ones

Like cut-creases, baking and razor-sharp brows, coffin nails are an Instagram-favourite. Nails are filed into a tapered point with a flat top. You’ll need nail extensions for this one (to make them hardier), as they tend to break easily.

Stiletto

The nails made for ASMR

Stiletto nails are not for the faint-hearted. You’ll need long nails for this look, so nail extensions work best. The nails are filed to a sharp (no, really) point. Glamorous, or hazardous – you decide.
