All the questions you should ask yourself before a big hair change

15 January 2020 by Beth Ryan

I don’t know who needs to hear this but, put down the scissors. A DIY fringe will not solve your problems. Nor will bleach (trust me, accidental-orange hair is not good for the old stress levels). If you’re planning a drastic hair change, then do just that: plan it. And leave it to the experts, please.

  • 1 Is it the right time?

If you’ve got an event coming up and you want to feel confident, a brand new ‘do can seem like a good idea – in theory. Remember, it can take time to get used to a big hair change. And that’s coming from me, Queen of Impulse Decisions.

  • 2 What's the upkeep like?

Let’s face it, some hairstyles are a lot more high-maintenance than others (fringes – I’m looking at you). If you’re going from lengthy balayage to a platinum bob – wake up and smell the peroxide – you’re going to be spending a lot more time (and money) on your hair.

  • 3 Will it work for me?

A haircut is never just a haircut, it’s a lifestyle. If you’re a bun-on-top-of-the-head kind of person, a cropped cut might not be for you. Short hair can need a deceiving amount of styling – especially if your hair is textured.

  • 4 Which stylist should I book?

Changing your stylist can be even more daunting than changing your hair. If you’re going for a new colour, look for a colour specialist. Do your research, ask for recommendations – you need to trust them. A good stylist will offer suggestions (listen to them).

  • 5 Is it doable?

Be realistic with your expectations. Colour changes could – and should – take time. A one-day transformation might look possible on Instagram but you might need more than one session to get it just right.
