Why we’re hooked on eyebrow threading

3 May 2024 by Beth Ryan

If you’ve travelled South East Asia’s backpacker trail, you’ll almost definitely have seen the art of threading at its best – and probably in full view, on the beach. Underarms, legs, even backs – there’s nothing a bit of string can’t take care of. This centuries-old hair removal technique uses nothing but a piece of cotton and good old-fashioned hand power to get rid of hairs. It’s had a mighty big impact in Britain too. Here’s why.

  • 1 It can achieve perfect definition

It’s official – threading is one of the seven steps to HD Brows. It gets rid of any niggly little hairs lurking around the brow line, leaving your arches crisp and well-defined. Your brows add structure to your face and frame your eyes, so if you slept through the alarm and have five minutes to get ready, with perfect brows you’re halfway there.

  • 2 It's quick enough to do in your coffee break

It usually takes less than 10 minutes for a professional eyebrow threader to shape your brows, so you can easily squeeze it into your lunch hour. You might need to factor in a bit of extra time for your first visit, but once you get into the swing of things it can take as little as five minutes. That’s the same time it takes us to remember where we put that elusive pair of tweezers.

  • 3 It ranks low on the pain scale

If you’re super sensitive to pain and you bruise at the slightest nudge on a busy bus (if only they made badges for people with low pain thresholds) threading’s a viable option. It’s so quick you hardly even notice the sting. The sensation feels a bit unusual, but not so much you’ll be fumbling for the aloe vera afterwards.

  • 4 And it’s easy to maintain

Threading catches the tiniest of hairs that your tweezers can’t get quite get a grip on. Also, the hairs mostly grow back in at the same time, so it’s easy to stay on top of preening. You just need to find a free slot in your diary for an appointment every four weeks or so.
