A celebrity hairstylist told us to live by these hair rules

11 August 2020 by Beth Ryan

They say never meet your heroes, but we’ve never heard them say ‘don’t ask your hair hero for advice’. So, with that in mind, we spoke to celebrity hairstylist, Andrew Barton, about the fundamental hair rules we should all be following. After all, he’s been in the industry for 30 years, been on the telly for years and worked with Eva Longoria – ‘expert’ doesn’t even cut it.

  • 1 Personalisation is key

“Personalisation is key,” Andrew told us. Just like with our skin, everyone’s hair is different. He suggests asking your stylist to prescribe you a 3-step hair care regime – shampoo, conditioner and deep-conditioning treatment. And the same goes for colour, “at Headmasters, every colour is bespoke and tailored to you”.

  • 2 Invest in in-salon treatments

It’s not just bleached hair that needs a little extra TLC (bleached hair needs a lot of extra TLC). In fact, Andrew says that everyone should treat their hair to regular in-salon treatments. “Salon treatments like Olaplex really help to repair damaged and broken bonds caused by colouring, heat damage and even brushing”.

  • 3 Regular trims are a must

You probably knew this one was coming. According to Andrew, regular trims are key for keeping your hair in optimum condition. “Haircare starts with a great hair cut,” he explains, “not only to remove split ends but to make it more manageable and keep it looking healthy”.

  • 4 Protect your hair

Heat damage is basically sacrilege when it comes to healthy hair so it comes as no surprise that Andrew suggests using heat protector. “To avoid potential damage, I always use some form of styling product or heat protector,” he says, “you should also try to avoid running over the same section of hair more than once with your heat tool”.
