If there’s one thing I’ve learned over the past year, it’s that a lack of professional hair help can make a gal consider doing some crazy things. A kitchen scissor cut, a DIY fringe, a box bleach job? Yep, there was a time when I would have tried anything for a change-up. I mean, with the amount of drama we’ve experienced lately, it made sense for our hairstyles to match.
Now though, with the light at the end of the tunnel in view and things getting closer to (the new) normal by the day, you might be wanting your hair transformation to be on the more *subtle* side. Cue: money piece highlights.
Money pieces, or face-framing highlights, are like the grown-up older sister of the 90s two-tone trend, which has been a fave of Instagram cool-girls for a while now. Whilst two-toners are a little dramatic for some, money pieces can be more blended, and are an easy way to add a subtle lift to your hair (if you’re feeling a bit adventurous though, chunkier money pieces can still add a serious statement to your look).
Lightening the hair around the face creates a halo effect, and adds a sunkissed dimension to the hair. Basically, it’s an easy way to brighten the whole head of hair, without causing as much damage as more intense colouring treatments. Money pieces can also be personalised to suit you best- whether you fancy making a statement or going for more of a natural vibe, the look is completely customizable.
For a more natural look, you can ask for the width of the highlight to be smaller, and the pieces to be more blended. You can also ask for finer highlights throughout the rest of the hair to make the contrast less stark. For a more statement look, go for chunky highlights at the front, and higher contrast in the tones between the highlights and the rest of the hair. Or, go bolder still by adding a touch of colour – basically, anything goes- so you do you.
Basically, money pieces are the perfect way to change up your look with *minimal* effort. If you’re waiting for a sign to get them- this is it.
