Four things to do before your hair appointment that will make your colour last longer

Published on 22 October 2021 - Last updated on 26 April 2022 by Beth Ryan

You’ve spent hours Googling the hair of your dreams (and finally decided to book something besides a ‘trim’). Don’t let that colour go easily. There are a few things you can do to make sure it lasts, even before you’ve taken to the salon chair. Think of this as the stuff your hairdresser wishes you knew – trade secrets, if you like. From shower tactics, to inspiration photos, these are our top four tips for longer-lasting colour.

      1 Book a patch test

A patch test makes sure that your skin doesn't react to the hair dye. A teeny smudge of the product will be applied to your skin, then you'll wait 48 hours to make sure it's a-okay. You can do this at any point before your hair appointment (just pop by your salon). Safeguard that scalp gang.

      2 Time it right

A colour change can take a while (especially if you’re shifting from dark to light), so plan your time accordingly. There'll be no running out of the salon with slick wet hair, and a cloak still clipped ‘round the neck so you can make brunch. Rest up, and give your stylist all the time they need to work their magic.

      3 Skip the shampoo

You should shampoo your hair at least 24 hours before your colour session, but never right before. That’s because ‘dirtier’ hair maintains the natural protective oil layer on your scalp, which acts as a barrier against the chemicals in hair dye. Healthier scalp, shinier colour, and you'll appreciate those sweet-smelling locks even more post-dye.

      4 Find some inspiration

If you know you’ll struggle to describe your dream hair colour, don’t bother, just bring a picture in. Remember to be realistic though, just because your favourite blogger is sporting *that perfect* icy blonde, doesn’t mean your stylist can get you there in one salon trip.
