When should you put up your Christmas decorations in your salon?

The short answer: when you feel like it, and when you’re feeling creative. But, if you want to know the ideal date (according to Catholic tradition), your decorations should go up on the day that Advent begins. That is, four Sundays before Christmas – this year it falls on 27th November.

Moreover, we know that you’ll probably be getting busier and busier as the big day approaches, and that your chairs (and to-do lists) will be jam-packed. So, better to get ahead before the rush starts. Speaking of getting ahead – if you want to get organised before Christmas (and give yourself more time to get into the Christmas spirit), why not say goodbye to pencil and paper, and invest in a time-saving salon management system? Treatwell’s intuitive and advanced digital salon calendar makes getting organised a breeze. Your creativity, your clients, and your employees’ stress levels at Christmas will all thank you for the change.

Decorating the outside of your salon: your front door.

The best thing about decorating your salon for Christmas is that you can really unleash your creativity and go as big as you want. If you want to go all-out, don’t limit yourself to the interior of your salon – add a little Christmas spirit to the outside, too. Let’s start with your salon door – a great place to draw the attention of passers-by, and one of the first things your clients will see upon arrival.

Want something simple and elegant? A classic Christmas wreath is the perfect option. You can customise them to match the aesthetic of your salon, and they never go out of style (so you can reuse them year after year).

Or, if you want something different, more luxurious, and a bit OTT – why not create a faux flower arch to outline the door of your salon? If you choose a colour scheme that matches your aesthetic, but isn’t exclusive to Christmas, then you can keep it up year-round as a way of strengthening your salon brand (which makes it a worthwhile investment). Then, simply add some lights to give it some festive flair, and remove them once the season is over.

The art of the Christmas window display

Never underestimate the power of what passersby can see from the street. You’d be surprised how many clients you can attract simply by creating an inviting environment in your salon.

Use your Christmas window display to get across your brand image, and take advantage of the opportunity to showcase your promotions and offers, too. Here are some theme ideas for your Christmas window display:

  • Enchanted Forest: Buy (or forage) some thin branches, arrange them to resemble a forest (as much as you can), and fill the floor with artificial snow. Add in some sprigs of pine, some baubles, snowflakes, and maybe some Christmassy forest creatures.
  • Mirror, mirror: The perfect theme for a salon? Mirrors, of course! Hang as many mirrors and combs as you can find from the ceiling next to your window (charity shops and car boot sales will be your best friend with this one). Add some finesse with some silver and gold accessories (think: tinsel, beads, baubles, etc). And on the ground, some more fake snow, because why not.
  • Sweet and sweet: Looking for something easy and understated? Get some fishing line, hang pine cones, baubles, candy canes etc. (anything with a Christmassy feel) and space them evenly in front of your windows.

Christmas decorations for your the interior of your salon

You’ve got your front door and window display sorted – now all that remains is to decorate the interior of your salon. It goes without saying that this will all depend on how much Christmas drama you want to add to the environment. Opt for a couple (or all) of the following:

1. Decorate your shelves

If you’ve got shelves in your salon, they’re a great place to add some Christmas cheer. Try filling some glass jars with glitter, baubles, or pine cones, and string some warm-tones lights around the inside. Or, take some cuttings from your Christmas tree to create a bouquet-like display. It really doesn’t take much to create an elegant Christmas adornment.

2. Consider a Christmas decoration feature wall

The perfect backdrop for a shareable Insta selfie – a feature wall is always a winner when it comes to salon decor. Of course, the investment is a little higher, but just like the door arch we mentioned earlier, it can be used year-round if done right. Take, for example, a flower wall. If you opt for neutral colours which match your salon decor (and don’t scream “Christmas” too much), all you need to do is add some Christmas decoration touches to give it a festive feel. Sprigs of pine, baubles, bows, and string lights – intersperse them between the flowers to make it the perfect Christmas backdrop for when you (and your clients) are sharing your Christmas looks on Instagram.

3. Surprise your salon’s clients with a festive mirror message

When it comes to your mirrors, less is more. After all, you don’t want to obscure your clients’ view of your amazing work. Still, it’s likely that your clients will be looking at the mirror for at least a little while during the visit, so it’s a great place to give them a surprise message. Use the opportunity to thank your clientele for their support during the year, or add a funny Christmas quip that they’d want to share on Instagram.

4. A classic Christmas tree – the essential Christmas decoration

Of course, it’s not Christmas without a tree. If you have room for one – decorate it to match the aesthetic of your salon. If. you have room in the budget, you can even stretch for personalised decorations. Think: pictures of your salon team (a great way to boost team morale); hair and beauty-themed baubles, and even branded decorations.

5. Reuse jars and containers as Christmas decorations in your salon

Looking for a more sustainable Christmas decoration idea? So, all of those jars, boxes, and containers that you’ve accumulated over the year? Give them a second life at Christmas by using them to create decorative elements. Add some pine cones, dried fruits, and twigs, and you’re good to go.

6. Add a signature Christmas scent

Ginger, cinnamon, chocolate – adding some Christmassy aromas is a great way to get your clients in the spirit. Place diffusers, candles, or both throughout your salon. It’ll create a warm and cosy atmosphere, and you’ll be sure to stick in the memories of all of your clients.

7. A Christmas treat?

Usually offer your clients a coffee, tea, or snack when they visit you? Why not add some Christmas-themed options to the mix. Offer them ginger tea or hot chocolate (or even mulled wine) and accompany it with some Christmas treats: candy canes and gingerbread cookies, are classics for a reason.
